Choir of the Earth began life as The Self-Isolation Choir, which was founded in March 2020 as a response to the Coronavirus pandemic. Its aim was to provide comfort and support to people worldwide who were feeling disconnected by bringing them together to sing glorious choral works.
Our Messiah At Home project united 3,500 people around the world to learn, record and perform Handel's Messiah online during the early months of lockdown, hitting the headlines around the globe.
The Choir has since attracted over 10,000 international singers to more than 70 choral courses and events, with over 7,000 current members. Its rebranding as Choir of the Earth in 2021 reflects how the choir has grown and matured from a pandemic phenomenon to an established choir, leading the way with digital singing innovation and climate neutral music-making.
👨🏼💻 We are not "a Zoom choir" - there is no need to worry about unstable Internet connections or looking presentable at rehearsal time. Our Musical Director teaches via YouTube to ensure the best possible audio-visual quality with minimal distractions or technical issues disrupting your experience. Nobody else can see or hear you, so you can really go for it and focus on the music and your voice.

🗓️ We are much more flexible than a face-to-face choir. There is no danger of falling behind or having your commitment questioned if you can't make a rehearsal or two - we understand that our members have busy lives, and that they live in different time zones all over the world. That's why all our live sessions are recorded - simply catch up when it suits you. And if life takes over and you don't have time for choir for a little while, that's no problem either - you will stay a member of the choir for as long as you like and be very welcome to join us for future courses whenever you feel you can.
◽ ◽ ◽
🏡 If you live in a remote area, have a disability, work shifts, or have family to care for, you'll know that joining a face-to-face choir isn't always practical for everyone. With Choir of the Earth, rehearsals are simply a click away in the comfort of your own home. Make new supportive friends in the live chat, or catch up later at a time that suits you. Stop and start the sessions as many times as you need to, or use it as some much-needed "me time".
◽ ◽ ◽
🎼 We provide the highest quality resources and teaching; from our detailed sectional rehearsals with our award-winning Musical Director, to our professionally-sung 'your voice louder' tracks, we will give you everything you need to learn and record your part with confidence and, most importantly, fun.
◽ ◽ ◽
😌 Your level of participation is your choice - we believe that absolutely everybody who takes part is equally important, whether you record every part for every piece or don't record anything at all. Our only rule is that, whatever you do, you have fun doing it!
◽ ◽ ◽
🧑🏽🎤 There are no auditions - absolutely everybody is welcome. Whether you are a complete beginner or a professional singer, we are quite sure you will always learn something new at Choir of the Earth, and really enjoy the choral experiences we offer. Why not challenge yourself?
◽ ◽ ◽
🤵🏻♀️ We are not restrained by geography, so our members can work with performers from all around the world. We have worked with Saul Zaks in Denmark, Sue Fink in Los Angeles, Carla Filipcic Holm in Argentina, Martín Palmeri in Argentina, the Conservatorio Gustav Mahler de Irapuato in Mexico, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, Roderick Williams OBE and Sir Mark Elder in Norway. We have worked with phenomenal artists to produce our learning resources. Our Members primarily learn their parts alongside the amazing Fieri Consort, and have previously learned with resources produced by Tenebrae, Helen Charlston, Ashley Riches, Laurence Cummings, Richard Gowers and Orchestra for the Earth.
◽ ◽ ◽
😮 We have more singers taking part in our courses than most face-to-face choirs, which means we can undertake ambitious and large-scale choral works that most choristers would otherwise never experience, such as Tallis' 40-part motet Spem in Alium with Tenebrae's Nigel Short in association with the Thomas Tallis Society, and Mahler's 8th (the 'Symphony of 1,000') with John Warner and his Orchestra for the Earth in association with the Mahler Foundation.
◽ ◽ ◽
🎵 We offer a huge range of courses to suit every taste:
♪ On the classical front we sing everything from choral stalwarts like Handel, Bach, Haydn and Mendelssohn, to contemporary composers like Patrick Hawes, Karl Jenkins, John Rutter and Eric Whitacre.
♪ We also offer courses to learn and record opera choruses, pop classics like ABBA and The Beatles, Church Slavonic pieces, musical medleys, a cappella works, and much more.
♪ As well as choral courses, we offer our Around Sound lecture series, delving deep into choral works, composers' lives, and even music itself, taught by leading experts and inspirational teachers such as John Suchet, Ben England BEM and John Warner.
♪ We also offer our popular (and free to all!) series of 'In Conversation' recorded discussions between our wonderful leaders Mark and Ben and a host of fascinating guests, such as Eric Whitacre, John Rutter CBE, David Hill MBE.
♪ And much, much more!
◽ ◽ ◽
👨👩👧👦 At the end of each course, absolutely everybody will be invited to attend a concert to premiere the Choir's performance. For those who took part, this is a unique opportunity to sing along with your own performance, alongside your fellow choristers, who will be doing thing in their homes around the world. You will also be able to invite your family and friends to attend or share the concert recording with them afterwards. Our concerts are always joyful, memorable, and often emotional events, and a true delight to be part of.
◽ ◽ ◽
🌍 Joining Choir of the Earth means you will be doing your bit to help reverse the climate crisis! Our name reflects our worldwide membership, but it also represents our commitment to sustainable music-making. Learning and teaching from home minimises our carbon footprint, as does holding our concerts online instead of the performers and audience all travelling separately to a venue. We also encourage the use of digital scores over paper, mp3s over CDs, etc, to further reduce our impact on the planet. Help us save our beautiful planet and feel good doing it!
◽ ◽ ◽
🧘🏾 We believe in the importance of holistic wellbeing - the vocal, physical and mental health of our members are all paramount. Unlike other online choirs, we encourage participation in the live chat during rehearsals and concerts, in part to facilitate an engaging and responsive rehearsal with our course directors, but primarily so we can all offer one another support, advice, company and encouragement throughout. We also have a private community forum to continue the conversation between sessions. Of course, if the chat or forum aren't really for you, that's ok too - just hide the chat and focus on the teaching. It's your experience to enjoy as you wish.
