J. S. Bach composed the Christmas Oratorio in 1734, narrating the story of the birth of Jesus through a cycle of six cantatas (BachWerk will perform cantatas 1, 2, 3 and 6). Like the St. Matthew and St. John Passions, the Christmas Oratorio is narrated by an Evangelist interspersed with chorales and arias.
