More than a vocal chamber ensemble, Camerata Sonora is a group of friends united by our love of singing and learning. Our membership includes professional and semi-professional musicians and enthusiastic amateurs with no formal music training. We believe anyone can make music, and that music is for everyone. We aim to spread awareness and appreciation for traditional music from diverse cultures and time periods. Through our eclectic performances we hope to leave listeners with a sense that music is alive and constantly evolving, and intimately tied to identity and place.
Our History
Camerata Sonora began in 2017 as a pick-up group of local professional-level musicians. In this early incarnation, Camerata performed a program of Jewish choral and solo vocal music from around the world, as well as Leonard Bernstein’s seldom-performed Chichester Psalms. The group reassembled with some new members in fall 2018, performing “Around the Black Sea,” a program of traditional music from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, in November.
Camerata Sonora ranges in size from 12 to 20 members depending on the nature of our programs. Auditions for new members are held periodically on an as-needed basis. Anyone 18 or older may audition. Formal musical training or prior performance experience is not required. However, you must be able to meet the following expectations:
Demonstrate basic music ability such as being able to match pitch and rhythm
