Our History
‘’The CHORAL, known originally as The Angus County Choir, was formed in the spring of 1966, after an invitation to soloists in all the musical groups in the county was instigated by (the late) Colin Wyllie, who had approached ‘music heads’ of church choirs and operatic societies. .. this resulted in the formation of a small but enthusiastic group of singers, meeting on Sunday afternoons in the Masonic Hall in Froickheim.
Colin Wyllie became the first Musical Director and Elizabeth Sturrock, the first accompanist..... they seemed to ‘gel’ well with the small nucleus of singers and before long, those singers drew others from their individual groups to form a full choir.
The first public performance took place in November 1966 in a concert shared with other groups... under the auspices of Angus Council... which was held in the Council Chambers.
There was an unfortunate break in proceedings in 1968 but ANGUS CHORAL SOCIETY blossomed in 1971, under the baton of Richard Evans with his wife Rosalind as accompanist and membership exceeded 100 folks when we sang Bruckner’s Mass in F minor to a packed audience in the Reid Hall in Forfar in 1974.
We have done some other things since then/
It has always been the ambition of the choral to visit various churches in the county and these have included the Cathedral and Gardner Memorial in Brechin...St. John’s, Lowson Memorial, St Margaret’s, and East and Old.. (all in Forfar), Edzell Parish.. Glamis Parish and Carnoustie Church, on many occasions over many years.
