Tring Choral Society is a friendly, amateur choir, singing a wide repertoire of classical choral music. We rehearse on Monday evenings and always welcome new members. Usually we perform three concerts a year in St Peter & St Paul Church, Tring, accompanied by professional soloists and an orchestra.
Our History
The earliest records we have of Tring Choral Society date back to 1894, the first known concert took place in the Victoria Hall, Tring, in that year. The Society flourished after the Second World War under the direction of John Lowdell and Roland Stevens. Since 1974, its success has continued under the direction of Colin Stevens. The present strength of the Society is between 70 and 80 voices.
There are three regular concerts a year in Winter, Spring and Summer, with some additional events for special occasions. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in the centre of Tring is the usual concert venue.
The choir holds social events too, and often provides singers for joint choir ventures and charity events.
Additional Info for Choristers
We are a friendly society where enthusiasm and commitment are as important as musical prowess, although the rules do allow the musical director to audition individual members should the need arise. All voice parts are welcome but, as with all amateur choirs, men are particularly sought after, Tenors in particular.
The annual membership subscription for the 2023-2024 season is £165.
This will rise to £175 for the 2024-2025 season.
Free membership for under-30s.
There is a Scholarship scheme for young musicians willing to participate in the choir for a year, under which a bursary of £250 is awarded to support music tuition. Click here for further details.
Rehearsals take place each Monday evening in Akeman Street Baptist Church, from 7:45pm to 9:45pm.
Our Mission
Whilst the Society focuses principally on the main classical choral repertoire, from time to time it has commissioned new works. The Society also, on occasions, joins with other Choral Societies and Schools to perform major works, at such venues as the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall.
The Society has an enviable local reputation for the consistently high quality of its concerts. Professional soloists are always engaged, and we use an excellent orchestra for most performances. The weekly rehearsals, under Colin Stevens’ direction, are a well-balanced blend of discipline and informality: demanding, but enjoyable.
