Providence Singers is 90-voice choir composed of auditioned and paid singers. The Providence Singers perform regularly with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, including an annual performance of Handel's Messiah, and with other area ensembles. Led by artistic director Christine Noel, the Singers perform choral masterworks and notable works by new composers. The Providence Singers expand the choral tradition by commissioning and performing new works, such as "Westminster Bridge" by Ola Gjeilo, written for choir, piano, and string quartet. The choir has created four professional recordings of music by American composers, most recently Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living.
Our History
The 2022-23 concert season is the Providence Singers' 52nd year, and also marks the 10th anniversary of artistic director Christine Noel.
Singers who enjoy performing with orchestra and want to perform at a high level of musical and vocal excellence should consider auditioning for the Singers. Our members include professional and semi-professional singers, music teachers, music students, graduates of the Rhode Island Children's Chorus program, and avid choral singers whose occupations include physicians, writers, teachers, baristas, and full-time parents. Member age ranges from high school students to retirees.
The Providence Singers presents choral performances of distinction to connect singers, listeners, performers, and composers in creative exploration of the choral art. It performs diverse choral works to preserve the choral tradition and extends that tradition by commissioning and performing new compositions. Through its concerts and recordings, and by fostering the musical growth of its membership and young singers, it sparks creative connections that nurture lifelong choral singing and civic engagement
