Concert Singers of Cary

The Concert Singers of Cary was incorporated in October 1991 as an initiative taken at the recommendation of a citizens advisory committee empaneled to expand cultural arts programs in Cary. The first performance took place that same month for the dedication of what is now The Herb Young Community Center.

The planning committee included Mable Howell, Barbara Brown, Fuller Blunt, Sarah Sheffield and founding Artistic Director Lawrence Speakman. The goal was to provide an auditioned, year-round performing organization to serve Cary and provide opportunities for local singers.

One of the greatest successes of The Concert Singers of Cary has been its ability to achieve its goal to be an active, dedicated and vibrant community organization. As a resident organization at the Cary Arts Center, they are known for their frequent collaborations with local cultural organizations and performance artists, such as the Cary Eid Festival, Diamante, MLK Dreamfest Celebration, Cary Visual Art, The Triangle Wind Ensemble, Mallarme Chamber Players, Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band, The Moonlighters Orchestra, and The Cary Town Band.

Throughout its history, The Concert Singers of Cary has teamed with The North Carolina Symphony, The North Carolina Opera Company and The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle in area venues including Meymandi Hall, Carolina Theatre, Koka Booth Amphitheatre and Memorial Hall. On more than 15 occasions, performances by The Concert Singers of Cary have been listed as a “Classical Best Bet” by The News and Observer
