The Victoria Scholars Men’s Choral Ensemble is named after Tomás Luis de Victoria, an outstanding composer of the Renaissance period, whose music is renowned for its deep spirituality and emotional expressiveness. With an emphasis on the clarity and balance of sound so characteristic of Renaissance music, the ensemble’s repertoire includes Medieval plainchant, works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, contemporary pieces in a variety of styles, and newly-commissioned works – all presented through the unique sonority of male voices. A past winner of the Canada Council Healey Willan Grand Prize in the CBC Radio National Competition for Amateur Choirs, the Victoria Scholars has released five widely acclaimed CDs, and has recorded with singer/song-writer Loreena McKennitt and with Canadian soprano Mary Lou Fallis. In addition to its own concert series, the ensemble performs regularly with other local and international arts organizations and vocal soloists. The Victoria Scholars has toured nationally and internationally, and is heard regularly on CBC Radio and Classical 96.3FM.
