Description
On Saturday evening, 24th September, at 7PM, the Saint John Men's Chorus & Cantores Celestes will be hosting a concert: “New Beginnings – An evening of classical choral music” at Portland United Church-Saint John NB 50 Newport Crescent in Saint John. Tickets are $20.
This concert marks a new start for the Saint John Men's Chorus since the arrival of COVID in 2020. It will also be the debut performance of a new women's group, Cantores Celestes, that has attracted many talented singers from the area.
Both choirs are under the direction of Kelly Galbraith, with accompanists Rebecca Burrill and Dr. Kevin Langford.
The Saint John Men's Chorus has long been known for its eclectic repertoire and this concert will not disappoint its many followers. Besides a set of ‘Sea Songs’ by local composer Dr. Paul S. Jones, they will also perform ‘Songs of the Sea’ by Charles Villiers Stanford. It will be the first times this series has been performed in the Atlantic Provinces and will feature the fine Saint John Baritone, Dr. Kevin Langford!
Cantores Celestes (Maritimes) is a new edition of Kelly Galbraith’s spirited Toronto choir that sang to sold-out audiences in that city for 30 years. They will perform Henry Purcell’s delightful suite ‘Come Ye Sons of Art’, music by 11th century female composer Hildegard von Bingen, Canadian composer Stephen Hatfield’s ‘Bonny Wood Green’ and Bob Chilcott’s enchanting ‘Peace Mass’.
The choirs will end the concert with a joint performance of Oscar Peterson’s ‘Hymn to Freedom’.
