Why You Should Attend

The Creation is a joyful, life-affirming work, inspired by a festival performance of Handel's Messiah Haydn attended in 1791. He set out to create a work that would impress, inspire, and entertain. The Creation includes grand choruses in the scope of Messiah, as well as virtuosic arias for the three soloists. He also made lavish use of tone painting, most famously the depiction of chaos at the beginning of the work and the C major chord at the end of the phrase "and there was LIGHT!"

Providence Singers will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra and a reproduction of a late 18th century fortepiano by Viennese maker Anton Walter, who supplied instruments to Haydn and Mozart.
