Chelmsford Male Voice Choir can trace its origins back to 1903 when it sang to raise funds for British troops fighting in the Boer war. The choir was re-formed in 1948 by Bill Gane, who was eventually succeeded by his son Jack.
Many thousands of pounds have been raised for local and national charities and in 1999 the choir received a Highly Commended Award for Services to the Arts from Chelmsford Borough Council.
The choir has a membership in excess of 70, drawn from many walks of life. Our repertoire includes many modern as well as traditional male voice choir pieces. A number of these were specifically arranged for Chelmsford Male Voice Choir by our former Musical Director, John Taylor. The choir has sung with the Band of the Grenadier Guards at Colchester before an audience of 900 and at the Essex W.I. Christmas Concert to an audience of over 1,000 in the Brentwood Centre. We have travelled to Brecon in South Wales to sing with Talgarth Male Choir and performed concerts at Whitby as guests of The Dalesmen Singers. Choir members were also thrilled to sing in York Minster, in Jersey and Norwich. In 2004 we recorded our first CD entitled "Deep Harmony". The choir has appeared twice as guests of London Welsh Male Voice Choir in the 2014 and 2016 Festivals of Male Voices at the Royal Albert Hall as part of a massed choir approaching 800 singers on stage in front of a capacity audience of 5,000.
Our musical director Eddie Carden grew up in a musical family and has been an enthusiastic musician from an early age – playing piano and cello and singing in school and church choirs. During the past 25 years he has sung with a variety of choral societies in London and Essex, including eight years with Chelmsford Male Voice Choir as chorister. In recent years he has acted as Deputy Musical Director before being appointed MD. Eddie is a member of the British Association of Choral Directors.
During 2017, the choir helped several local charities in the Chelmsford area to raise some £10,000 for good causes.
